| The good state of South Dakota, while leading the nation in production of palaces made from corn and giant mountain sculpture, has not been seen on the map since George McGovern failed to win even his home state in his failed presidential election of 1972. A lot of water under the bridge since those good days, and perhaps it is time, once again, to turn our eyes to the Midwest. Vermillion, South Dakota, residence to the University of South Dakota, also plays home base for indie/rock and roll/indie rock and roll act, The Kickback.
Comprised of brothers Billy Yost (vocals/guitar) and Danny Yost (drums), Cody Raterman (guitar) and Zachariah Verdorn (bass/harmonies), The Kickback’s music has been likened to the sounds of Kings of Leon, The Strokes, and The Clash. Though Danny just recently earned his college degree, and Cody and Billy will be receiving theirs in the fall of 2008, the boys will only be dedicating more of their future time to touring in support of their 2008 EP, A New History.
In their short history, the boys have opened for such diverse acts as Fishbone, Shiny Toy Guns, mewithoutYou, and Thrice. Following a string of dates with Fishbone, bassist Norwood Fisher offered to release the group’s upcoming EP on his NS5 record label, which is currently in the works. After tracking the EP at ARC Studios in Omaha (home to records from Bright Eyes, Cursive, and Rilo Kiley), the band will be touring nationally for 50 dates in 50 days during the summer months, before returning home for a final semester of college for the strings section.
The group’s songs (ranging from a lurid fascination with the Marquis de Sade to the Irish gang wars of the early American century to the mojo bag around Billy’s neck) reflect the New Ugly and the weirdest of times for any band to be making a go of it. But The Kickback will be pushing until the cows come home, and they know cows. |
