| A lot can be said about what Merk has done. Good and bad. But to know his music is to understand his life, his trials, and his passion. The 21 year old San Francisco-based emcee has been around the bush and back again. With his fan-base growing from his hometown in the bay area to Oxnard, Ca. and a mix CD on deck, he's sure to have listeners wanting more.
Since the young age of 12, this soft spoken emcee loved to rhyme. It was his outlet. Through personal trials and tribulations, the pen pad and music has been there for comfort. While growing up he listened to emcees and groups such as Secluded Journalists, Pharcyde, Slum Village (Jay Dee, T3, Baatin, Elzhi), Pete Rock, Reflection Eternal, and Souls Of Mischief just to name a few. Through them, he incorporated a style all his own yet he was looked down upon by his peers. Knowing he was one of the last of his kind, he stayed tuned in to 106.1 KMEL on saturdays to hear the Wake Up Show to know he was not alone.
At 15 he played a part in a youth based hip hop program, called The DJ Project, out of San Francisco. There he learned how to make beats using production tools such as the computer program Reason and Pro-Tools. As time went on, his style developed into a more colorful brand of hip hip speaking of his harsh upbringing in a low class home, that very many inner city youth can relate to.
With songs by credited artists such as Jahi and The Life, DJ Quest and Azeem at such a young age, he was a sure shot for success on both sides of the spectrum. Plenty of rappers who have came through Horizons Unlimted's basement studio will attest "Merk's a real shot of life"
"Been a fan since a young'un, but I'm a man of few words. I pretty much let my music speak for me."- Merk |
