BIO
Ma Shotta who generally accepts the alias Mama Gangsta, was born Carmella L. Turner in Columbus , Ohio in August of 1983. Rapping and writing her own lyrics since the age of 13 has been formerly known as “The J.O.K.E.R.” and “A.Y.P.” (A Young Poet).
When the 24 year old single mother was asked why she changed her name, in her own words, she replied; “Ma Shotta doesn’t just mean I’m running around shootin’ up the city and shit, but it stands for many other things as well, like keeping it real at all times, I don’t feel I gotta lie to NOBODY, I can’t get a spankin’… I’m not a kid anymore, so fuck whoever doesn’t like what comes out of my mouth, what I stand for cause they ain’t feedin’ me or my child…Just basically doing whatever I feel that needs to be done so that my child and I didn’t have to go without. I was 19 when I got pregnant with my first child, and her father used to beat my ass, cheat on me, and the whole nine, but what really stumped me was when I tried to work it out, he left me and the baby to fend for ourselves. I wasn’t able to keep a steady job after the downfall of that relationship, but that didn’t stop the damn bills from coming, and he damn sure wasn’t there to help me out. Me and my child didn’t have a bed to sleep on cause he kept it for himself, so for six months we slept on the couch together until my mother bought me a bed, because I was barely holding onto my one bedroom apartment.
I got tired of not knowing where our next meal was coming from, or how I was gonna cover the next months rent because I had lost my job because my focus was on my child’s father dum ass instead of work, so just like a nigga, I got hold of my tool and I hit the streets and I hit anybody who I thought had the bread. I had rent, utilities, daycare, phone, car notes and I didn’t give a fuck how I had to the get the money as long as I wasn’t selling ass… Its amazing I’m not doing time right now for the shit I’ve done, some may say its sad that I did it, but fuck ‘em, it may have been the wrong choice, but like I said they wasn’t feeding me and mine and when this nigga (baby dad) is out in the streets hustling, and riding with chrome rims and taking care of his boys and them bitches, and got a pocket full of money, but not helping me and his daughter, I did what I felt I had to, and if I had to do it over, them same people unfortunately would just have to fall victim to my wrath, I couldn’t see us in the streets and I never will as long as I’m alive, ya know. I wasn’t out to kill a nigga, but I had to do what I had to do, and I didn’t have to once suck a dick or fuck no nigga to get the job done. I thank the Lord I’m still here today with my daughter and not locked up doing football numbers for doing this or doing that, and I had to give that lifestyle up and use this music as my only way out… I rightfully earned the name Mama Gangsta, cause I don’t know any other mother who was willing to repeatedly put her life on the line and do the things I was doing… not sayin’ they ain’t out there, cause I know they are, but I’m the truest of my genre’, the realest of my generation, and I got the battle scars to prove it all. I’ll bust my gun with the rest of ‘em, if need be, shoot with the best of ‘em.”
Never having another writer/producer write her lyrics, Ma Shotta’s true pain of life, love, failure, and a rise to it all is Donned inside of her music. She’s recorded for record labels Eye4Eye entertainment as A.Y.P. before moving on to bigger and better as Ma Shotta aka Da Mama Gangsta, with producer Mann B. backing her with killer tracks that allow this young female emcee to do her thing.
She’s performed in such clubs as CBR, Hi Five, CNS, and Skully’s, just to name a few. She had ties with former Famed rap artist Bizzy Bone when she was once known as The J.O.K.E.R., but being no stranger to the fact that this is a cut throat business, the young emcee was not surprised when she fell on empty promises made by others to help her to her start to being one of Hip Hops most recognized female artist in this History.
Ma Shotta’s debut single “Okay” & follow up “Stand Down” (I’m number one) has kept the clubs pumping in her city, while the track “I’m Mama Gangsta” (There can only be one me) has kept a controversial issue arising about the Emcee’s sexuality, which she keeps no secret.
“I love women… I like men, but I love women… I don’t see myself giving up on men all together, but I’ve had my share of a bad love or two in my life time, and the nigga’s wasn’t full of nothin’ but shit and games… Women are just easy to understand, they are motherly, and they are protective… Me being a woman, I can relate better than a man can to how unfairly another woman has been treated and I know how to whole heartedly love a person. I’m not seeing anyone at the moment, my focus in grindin’ these records and raisin’ my family in a single parent setting but I’m not shy about who I am, and again, that’s why my name is Mama Gangsta… I keep it totally gutter… can’t handle it, shut the fuck up, sit the fuck down and mind ya business then… point blank…”
The female emcee credits rappers such as Tupac, T.I., Jay-Z, & Lil’ Wayne for some of her inspiration, she credits her daughter Jordan and her struggles of life for being the soul inspiration for it all.
In closing, the young lady says “I need music like I need the air to breathe, it’s like my other baby, and I love it just like I love my child. I don’t listen to much rap, but Pac by far was the greatest ever to me, I’ll listen to others such as Wayne, Jay-z, T.I and even some Kanye, Jeezy, and Plies, but these other motha fucka’s out here are funny, they’ll make anything and sell it and get a platinum record for it, however they whole album is full of shit like them, very few know how to make an album full of good songs, hopefully, the industry has room to let this young lady in and prove a thing or two about life and good music…”
