| -DRAZIL- from Gallup, New Mexico USA. The band was established in 1999. Two of the founding members Johnathan Sylversmythe(Guitar)and Landon Lucio(Drummer),students at the same high school, would get together after school and play songs which were current at the time or they would play their own personal favorites
"...It's funny because we just got to that point where we could'nt play anything else. I was just learning how to play drums. Most of the time we just sat there and looked at each other."-LKL
With only drums and guitar they found Felix Arthur(vocals)who was susposed to be the group's bass player. Learning songs from System of a Down, Slipknot, Def tones, Korn, Soulfly, etc.
"I remember Landon asked me if I knew any Metallica songs. I said, "Hell No!!" and that was the last time he ever asked me that question again."-JJS
They practiced at least two hours a day or a good three during an after school teacher's meeting. It was a small room in the back of the band's classroom. Using the school's Government B.I.A.- stamped drum set, a tiny 8'' speaker guitar amp, and no PA or microphone, Felix had to scream at the top of his lungs to be heard during practice.
"...at one time during a practice we were playing My Own Summer by the Def Tones. I knew the words to it but I couldn't play the bass part and sing at the same time, so I put the bass down and just kept on singing and screaming."-FJA
After two years of just small meaningless practices in a small and stuffy room with only cover tunes to play, the group was asked to play at a skating competition held at their high school. It would be their first live performance ever. They didn't even have a name for their group when they were asked what their band name was. It only took a minute to make one up.
"In high school I use to tagg the word "LIZARD" all over the place. It was tagged backwards so the reflection of it would read "Lizard". When we needed a name for the band I think it was Landon that actually said, "How about Drazil, that thing you're always tagging everywhere." I thought to myself Drazil?? but that says lizard. So two to one, that became the name of our little group."-FJA
When Felix moved from bass player to the band's frontman and vocals, the band had to find a bass player with the same ideas and creativity they had. When they were not looking for a bass player, they were in "The ho gone" writing original songs and trying to find their own style. In 2003 after searching for a committed bass player, they found not him but her. |
