Originally from Alabama , Stephen Powell AKA “Black Steve,” started his career as a gospel singer singing gospel music at a very young age in Alabama . After moving to San Francisco in 1989 he began around the Bay Area and performing gospel plays in churches and cultural centers. This evolved into song writing and rapping after being inspired to give his nephew some wisdom and encouragement to live right. The name “Black Steve” was given to him by his friends. He is well known for his country style that shows his southern roots.
