| "Hello from the Up-Down Room." is the latest record from Steve Robinson and the Foundation. This record spans all the influences that Steve has. It is brought to life by a group of talented friends Steve calls 'The Foundation'. The sounds captured on this record span a man's life from youthful acoustic sprall, to jaded appothy hiding a glimmer of hope, and culminates with a love song from the grave.
Steve is the son of an Air Force officer and sixties touring R&B guitarist and Grandson to famous Vaudevillian and Chicago Folk Music hall of fame inductee Jesse Olden Cryor. Growing up with a family tradition of music it's no mystery why this independent songwriter found his influences to be Sonic Youth, Neil Young, Aimee Mann, and Richie Havens just to name a few.Steve's whole life is in the songs, if you listen. He hangs his story on a note and holds it there with a phrase.
Steve views life as a series of events, experiences, years past, and years to come: not just a string of yesterdays. The listener starts to understand this with lyrics like these from the song 'Crown':
"Mary's baby gives the count down. Mary listens with sadness and some pride. She knows she gonna be something someday: stronger than the father who wouldn't stay."
S.R.T.F.’s styles range from, rock to acoustic. He moves from innocent to defiant; the psychedelic to the sublime. Those transitions allow him one moment of seductive lyrics, the next, aloof observations. When the subject matter changes from sad but hopeful to resolute and introspective the transitions never seem to clash.
Live performances, thought to be another “animal”, allows S.R.T.F. utilize each venue and audience member to channel every emotion their songs have to offer. Each intimate moment of his songs have more weight when they’re performed. Every guitar riff washes over the crowd and with each wave; the audience draws closer to the band. In short, this is Steve Robinson and The Foundation.
